In June 2024, Kenya witnessed an unprecedented uprising led not by seasoned politicians or traditional activists, but by a new generation of bold, tech-savvy citizens. Sparked by public outrage against the controversial Finance Bill 2024, the country’s middle class, creatives, and Gen Z, many stepping into political protest for the first time took to the streets in a historic stand. What began as online outrage quickly transformed into mass mobilization powered by content, phones, and digital solidarity. For many, the spirit of peaceful protest echoed the End Femicide March earlier that year. But this time, the State met them with brutal force. Undeterred, young Kenyans continued to show up in greater numbers, using creativity, humour, and unity as their weapons. On June 25th, as Parliament passed the Finance Bill, demonstrators stormed its gates in defiance. Days later, under immense national and global pressure, the President rejected the bill in a televised address, a rare concession to people power in Kenya’s modern history. The People Shall tells this story through the eyes of eight young activists, protesters, medics, lawyers, artists and citizen storytellers, many of them women. Their voices capture the courage, grief, chaos, and hope of a generation that has forever changed how protest is done in Kenya. Blending real-time footage, social media chaos, and intimate interviews, the documentary paints a portrait of a decentralized revolution, one powered by resilience, digital creativity, and community. It is the story of how a generation stood up to power and dared to imagine a country that works for everyone.
